Following the Future Media Lab. conference in Ghent in November 2012 on “creative funding for creative media” when experts from media companies, donor organisations and journalists discussed innovative ways of financing quality journalism, we created an expert group that is currently exploring the potential for cooperation of these three areas in the future. The aim is to safeguard quality journalism by attracting media companies to allow creative funding (i.e. crowdfunding, foundations) to cover the costs for journalistic projects that under normal business conditions would not be realized. The Future Media Lab. Annual Conference 2014 staged a debate on the future of content.
The Future Media Lab. is proactively shaping media innovation. With its unique network the Future Media Lab. is well positioned to create moments of exchange and reflection between media executives, media innovators, academics and policy makers on media innovation in Europe. Meeting the innovator at start-up tours in Berlin, London, and Barcelona, insight workshops for hand picked innovative start-ups and media executives as well as bringing exceptional start-ups on stage at the so called “innovation moments” at public events, like the Future Media Lab. Annual Conference, are formats the Future Media Lab. will further develop to boost the exchange on innovation.
We ask the question how EU legislation impacts media diversity across Europe. By gathering experts from media, politics, academics and other relevant sectors, the Future Media Lab. is raising a debate about the influence of legislative files, such as data protection regulation, VAT, AVMS, copyright, and competition law on a free, independent, diverse and vibrant media that is so crucial for Europe’s democratic society. The Future Media Lab. Annual Conference in January 2015 staged a debate on media diversity in the digital age.
The “Technology Disruptions” project of the Future Media Lab. picks a cutting-edge innovation and reflects it in light of the most recent media trends. The Future Media Lab. Annual Conference in 2013 staged a debate about disruptions in the media sector. Since then we have run two expert workshops in March 2014 on the question of“programmatic advertising” and in March 2015 on “big data” . Both workshops have been realised in the context of the Digital Innovators Summit in Berlin.
This work stream is digging deeply into the topic with the help of relevant key stakeholders and experts to understand the developments and disruptions and to reflect about the potential impact on the media sector and related legislative and non-legislative framework.
There are many ways of joining the Future Media Lab.‘s network. From participating in events and webinars and following us on social media sites to developing media partnerships or sponsorship opportunities, the Future Media Lab. offers the opportunity for involvement at many levels.
