In touch with innovation: talking to Trint

The Future Media Lab. team is continuing our “In touch with innovation” series on our blog with a series of Q&A’s that were conducted with media start-ups from across Europe. In this edition, we spoke with Jeffrey Kofman, CEO and co-founder of Trint in the UK. Trint is the first software to use A.I. to transcribe audio/video recordings allowing users to quickly and affordably search, verify and trust the output.

 

Future Media Lab.: What is the main idea behind your startup?

Jeffrey Kofman: I have been a broadcast journalist on American and Canadian television for more than 30 years. In all that time I have watched as technology has completely transformed the way we research, record, assemble and disseminate news. The one process that hasn't changed throughout my career is transcription: we used to record our interviews on mini-cassette recorders, today we often use a digital recorder, but we still need to extract the content manually: PLAY. STOP. TYPE. PLAY. STOP. TYPE. REPEAT. It is tedious, time-consuming and it delays our workflow. For years I wondered why no one had come up with a way to use Artificial Intelligence to do the heavy lifting of transcription.

 

FMLab.: What observation kicked off your project?

JK: When I met a brilliant team of developers who had done work on searchable transcripts I saw the potential to collaborate to create software that would disrupt the traditional transcription workflow. They had created a player that tethered manual transcription to the text on the screen. I wondered aloud whether automated speech-to-text could be used: could we find a way to let users search their content, quickly verify the accuracy of the machine-generated transcript and if necessary correct it? That's how Trint was born. It reduces hours of work to minutes, at very low cost.

 

FMLab.: What is your added value to media companies in content curation/dissemination/monetization?

JK: In our digital age all news organisations depend on recorded content. But once recorded it's impossible to search the content without time-consuming and costly manual labour. Trint makes it easy to very quickly search recorded content, select relevant quotes and share them. Recorded content that isn't searchable is dark data; Trint shines light on dark data.

 

FMLab.: How (if at all) could established media companies and innovative startups/projects best collaborate over content creation?

JK: Trint doesn't just save time and money. It makes it easier to get the most out of your content. News organisations are under immense pressure to get a single piece of content onto multiple platform (digital, broadcast, print, social, podcast.) That is time-consuming. As Trint evolve this year you will see instant social media integration added to our platform. Trint makes it easy to find and share content, even if you didn't create the original content yourself.

 

FMLab.: What is your next big challenge/goal?
JK: We want to integrate Trint into media workflow, making it simple take raw recordings of audio and video and quickly find content and publish it. We will be building mobile and collaborative tools for easy upload and multiple users. Our goal is to make Trint an end-to-end publishing tool that transforms the way users manage audio and video content.
